Hospitality interiors ask a surface to be photogenic on the first day and maintainable on every day after that. The two requirements are not in conflict, but they do need to be considered together.
Public areas benefit from a defined moment. A reception wall, a bar front or a lift lobby is the right place for a strongly veined or dark surface, because the area is supervised, the lighting is designed and the surface is seen deliberately.
Circulation is a different problem. Corridors and back-of-house routes are best served by surfaces with granular or fragmented pattern, which carry the marks of daily use far better than a plain, uniform ground.
Guest rooms sit between the two. A quiet surface allows the room to be redecorated over its life without the floor dictating the palette, which protects the value of the original specification.
