Neutral is not one colour. Greys carry blue, green or brown undertones, and whites range from cold and clinical to soft and creamy. Most schemes that feel slightly wrong are schemes in which two neutrals are pulling in opposite directions.
The simplest discipline is to choose a temperature and stay with it. A cool white marble look sits comfortably beside a blue-grey stone and a silver-toned plain surface. A warm greige belongs with ivory, amber and timber.
Where a scheme must include both, use one temperature for the large areas and the other for a defined accent. A warm feature wall against cool floors reads as a choice; the same two temperatures spread evenly across a room reads as an accident.
Daylight matters as well. A room facing away from the sun will pull a neutral cooler than it appears in a showroom, which is a good reason to review samples in the space itself.
