Colour is returning to interior surfaces, and it is arriving through stone rather than paint. Deep greens, warm ambers and soft terracottas are being used where a neutral would once have been the default.
Restraint is what makes it work. A single coloured surface, framed by neutral floors and plain walls, reads as considered. The same colour applied across a whole room quickly becomes the only thing the room is about.
Scale is the second consideration. Coloured surfaces are most effective at a defined size: a vanity, a niche, a bar front, a fireplace surround. These are the elements people approach, so the detail of the veining is actually seen.
Finally, consider the metals and timbers around them. Green sits naturally with brass and dark timber; amber prefers bronze and mid-brown oak. Getting these pairings right does more for a scheme than adding another colour.
